- Buy a traditional house on Skopelos Island

Traditional roof terrace house in Skopelos Town

We hope you are all having a good start to the new year.

Skopelos, the greenest Greek island, is thoroughly enjoying being the star of Mamma Mia!

The island is a blend of past times and modern times – although most new houses are built very much in the traditional style. This is because Skopelos has been honoured by a presidential decree as a traditional settlement of outstanding beauty. Therefore the building codes mandate that all new constructions must carry the exterior Greek themes, as seen throughout Skopelos.

Many people like the idea of buying an old traditional house and restoring it to its former glory. The materials and skills to carry out a sensitive restoration are readily available on the island and the craftsmen really care about the quality of their work.

The key is to blend the features we all love – wooden balconies, roofs with open timberwork inside, enhancing rather than hiding the old stone – with the comforts of modern indoor bathrooms and well equipped kitchens.

In Skopelos Town you can have a restored traditional house for around €175,000. Press here for details. In Glossa or Machala at the other, more traditional, end of the island you can buy a house from about €130,000. Press here for details.

Some of these loving restorations are sold with all furniture and white goods, representing really good value for money.

If you want to roll up your sleeves and start from scratch, be prepared to pay around €50,000 for an old house and budget up to another €100,000 to make it perfect. It’s your choice!

Come and see for youself. Come and see the stunning landscapes and how the Pine trees sweep down to the deep blue of the Aegean sea.
